Pet pigs: pig pets are cuter than cats | Death and Taxes

Okay, okay, pet pigs aren?t cuter than cats. Cats are adorable! And judging the relative cuteness of a grown animal is silly: some people are cat people, some people are pig people. Why compete? But if you?re like me, and you?re interested in someday owning a pet pig, there are a few things you might want to know.

When considering if a pet pig?potbellied or otherwise?is right for you, the first thing you may want to consider is ?do I have the space?? Unlike cats and dogs, pigs have a hard time acclimating to extreme weather. If you adopt a pig, you?ll need to provide it heat in the winter and and cool in the summer. If you?re keeping your pig in a shed or a ?pighouse? outside, you?ll need a heater for the cold months and plenty of shade and a pool or puddle for the hot months.

The second question a potential pig owner may want to consider is, ?Do I really care about my carpeting and material possessions?? You?ve probably already heard that pigs are smart, but you may not know what smartness translates to in a pet. Intelligent pet pigs need to find ways to entertain themselves. Like teenagers, to stave off boredom, pigs often get into mischief. They?re known to scrape off wallpaper, ?root up carpeting or linoleum floors, eat drywall, overturn house plants and root through the dirt.? Janie Finck of the North American Potbellied Pig Association told NBC, ?[Pet pigs] like to be part of the family. But you have to keep them occupied. They won?t go in the corner and sleep all day like a dog or cat. And they can be destructive.?

If you have the space and patience for a pig, and you happen to live in a city that allows them (sorry, NYC), the next question is, of course, how do you go about getting one? There are lots of resources for pig enthusiasts, especially those interested in rescuing an abused or abandoned pig. If you live in New York state, try Pig Placement Network. If you?re in the Florida area, try Adopt a Piggy which shows headshots of abandoned grown pigs in need of rescue. And if you happen to live in California, try Lil Orphan Hammies, a well-named organization whose mission is to ?provide rescue, a safe environment, enrichment, and excellent care for potbellied pigs that are homeless, abandoned, neglected, or abused.?

Really, the best way to figure out how to get a pig is to Google ?adopt a pet pig (your state).? We wish you luck. If you have the space and patience, an oinker can be a loving and adorable pet.
