I had a dream last night. Mitt Romney had won the Republican nomination and the race for the presidency was on. But really on. The super PACs on behalf of Mitt coughed up their tens of millions for starters -- and the attack ads began everywhere, day and night:

Barack Obama, the worst thing that could have happened to America! Remember our America? Before he killed it. Deliberately. We were a nation of families and values and faith. He hated that. He wanted a more European America. A Saul Alinsky-style America. Barack Obama/Saul Alinsky -- does that sound like a team that can bring America back? No way. But worry not, not so long as our savior, Mitt Romney, and Republicans running for the Congress are in this race!!

Mr. Romney's attack ads seemed to be taking their toll. But then President Obama who once told the justices of the Supreme Court to their face that he "didn't think American elections should be bankrolled by America's most powerful interests," surrendered to his Democrat message machine and gave the nod to his own super PAC-men and the attacks began from the left. No less strident, no more virtuous.

At that point I may have awakened for a moment. I seem to recall stumbling by my wife on her way to the installation I had just left, but moments later I was back in my dream -- just in time to witness a kind of miracle taking place. Barack Obama awoke in the middle of the night, too, with an idea, or should I say an inspiration? Emerson said we all lie in the lap of an immense intelligence and we are merely receptors. Well, that intelligence sent Barack a doozie of an idea! It suggested he think about this: What if the president reversed himself about using attack ads in this election? What if the president of the United States allowed as how he, too, can make a mistake. Remembering that he called Citizens United "a threat to our democracy" when the decision was handed down, what if he told us he changed his mind? ?

The next thing I know there he is on television, delivering his STANDING ON PRINCIPLE speech. It is clear he has decided to open up to us totally. His messaging team has advised him that what he is doing is fool-hardy. Yes, everyone knows we need campaign finance reform, but we don't have it now, and he has to face the new reality. But not, responds the president, when he knows in his heart and mind that he can do better for the American people by telling them the truth. He has seen what these distorted, hate-filled attack ads have done to our political culture, how it has sewed fear and anxiety everywhere, and from this moment on he will have no part of it.

At this point my dream starts to sputter. A flood of news clips. The media, left and right, don't know what to make of it. THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES STANDING ON PRINCIPLE? ?"He's got something up his sleeve." "It's some damned socialist scheme." "No telling how far a liberal will go!"?"This is going to cost us the election." "We told him, if they're fighting and winning from the gutter we can't beat 'em from the high ground."

But then Barack tells the world he can and he will beat them from the high ground. He sits with O'Reilly and O'Donnell; with Blitzer and Hannity; with Sawyer and The View -- he is everywhere he can find a camera and a mic, with bits and pieces of it going viral to millions more, ?pushing his message that big money from both the left and right is, as he said earlier, a "threat to our democracy," and he owes it to the American people and the future of our country to stand on principle here.

Then low and behold, 'though he hasn't even asked for it, the American people see an opportunity to matter and seize on it. Tens of millions of dollars in $2 and $5 increments, then $10 and $20, come pouring in. The attack ads continue from the right 24-7. Fast-moving, beautifully shot, expensive and vicious as hell, like wallpaper, they are everywhere. Opposed to all that glitz, production and costly ad buys, I see in my dream the lone figure of Barack Obama. And what is he doing? He's standing on principle.

But his huge contributors see that, too. It's David vs. Goliath to them, and they know how that ends, so they start writing BIG checks. But -- what is this?! A new flood of news clips, all the talking heads yakking about: Barack won't take the big money. He'll not accept contributions larger than -- and he states a modest figure! Holy shit! The media goes truly wild now. The man is not only defeating the attack ads by standing on principle, he could even be paving the way for true campaign finance reform.

On the streets the Occupy Movement has grown by leaps and bounds. People form everywhere, feeling they had to do something, began joining them from the moment their president announced his "Principle vs. Money" campaign. ?

Americans were turned on again! In the streets, a celebratory bonfire was lit. The glow woke me up. Mr. President, what's the biggest check you'll let me write to make my dream a reality?

Top Marine apologizes for SS photo (Politico)

The head of the Marine Corps on Friday apologized for a photograph of U.S. snipers posing with a flag containing a Nazi symbol and said an investigation found the Marines pictured were ?ignorant? of the flag?s connection to the Holocaust.

?I want to be clear that the Marine Corps unequivocally does not condone the use of any such symbols to represent our units or Marines,? Gen. James Amos, the service?s commandant, said in a statement. ?I apologize to all offended by this regrettable incident.?

In response, Marine commanders have been ordered to investigate the prevalence of unauthorized symbols within the reconnaissance and sniper communities, Amos said. He also said Marines have since been schooled in ?the historical use of the SS symbology.?

The photo, taken in 2010 in Afghanistan, shows a Marine scout sniper unit in front of a U.S. flag and a flag resembling the insignia of the Nazi SS, a special unit that oversaw the killing of millions of Jews in Nazi-era Germany. The picture drew attention this week after it was publicized by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, The Wall Street Journal reported.

?Racist and anti-Semitic symbols have absolutely no place alongside the men and women of America?s armed forces,? Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement Friday.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta ?has asked the Marine Corps to look into this matter and to take appropriate action,? Little added.

Drilling Team Finally Hits Antarctica's Liquid Lake

After years of trying, Russian scientists say they have drilled into an Antarctic lake that is buried beneath more than two miles of ice. They are looking for signs of life that haven't been exposed to sky in 20 million years.

It took years to do, but Russian scientists say they've succeeded in drilling through more than two miles of ice to a lake buried deep under Antarctica. They're looking down there for what would have to be Earth's heartiest lifeforms, and whatever they find hasn't seen the light of day for perhaps 20 million years. NPR's Richard Harris reports.

RICHARD HARRIS, BYLINE: Vostok is one of the most hostile places on earth. Temperatures at the Russian camp dip below minus 50, winds howl, and the ice has proven tough to penetrate with standard drills. But Valery Lukin, who runs the project from St. Petersburg, says after years of work they finally punched through into the lake a few days ago.

VALERY LUKIN: We are very happy. We are resolved of our research.

HARRIS: It was a lot of work to get this far, wasn't it?

LUKIN: Yes, it was a very long period because we begin drilling these ice holes in 1990.

HARRIS: Back then, the Soviets were drilling down to collect meticulous ice samples to study the ancient air trapped inside. It's a remarkable record of the Earth's climate over the past 400,000 years. They had no idea they were sitting on top one of the biggest lakes on Earth. But after their drill hit some bizarre ice, they realized they were nearing liquid water. Getting through the last few hundred feet of devilishly challenging ice has taken years. They're looking for life forms that would have survived in isolation there for millions of years. Lukin says they brought up a sample of lake water but it's mixed with kerosene used in the drilling process, so it's impure. Next year, though, they're going back for a clean sample. John Priscu at Montana State University expects that they will find bacteria that are adapted to living in this extraordinarily harsh environment.

JOHN PRISCU: It's dark down there. There's no light that gets through two and a half miles of ice at all in Vostok, and they haven't seen the light of day for 15 million years.

HARRIS: Previous samples of ice near the bottom of the Vostok ice core suggest that bacteria live there and get their energy from minerals in the lake instead of from sunshine. Those bacteria produce waste that feed other bacteria, and there's a remote chance that life in Lake Vostok is much more interesting. Priscu says there are hints of hot mineral vents at the bottom of the lake, similar to deep sea vents that support rich ecosystems in the dark abyss.

PRISCU: If there are such situations in the bottom of Vostok, we could have an ecosystem with larger animals, such as tube worms or, you know, crabs or blind fish or whatever.

Science Claims Brain Size May Predict Risk For Alzheimers

An interesting new health science study may go a long way towards helping to find out who is most at risk for Alzheimer?s disease; an important step that will help doctor?s identify and possibly treat the disease in its earliest stages. The study examined people without memory loss (one of Alzheimer?s earliest recognizable symptoms) and managed to draw a correlation between the size of a patient?s brain cortex and their likelihood for developing early-onset dementia and eventually Alzheimer?s. This research comes on the shoulders of other scientific research that has already helped pinpoint the regions of the brain that deteriorate from the disease.

The study itself was conducted by running a brain scan on some 159 people with an average age of 76, all free of any sign of dementia. The patients were observed over the next three years and periodically administered tests in order to measure their basic attention span, overall memory, and ability to recognize and solve a particular problem.

These tests (both the MRI and the cognitive ability tests) were able to identify 19 patients as being at a high-risk for developing Alzheimer?s. 116 patients were identified as being at an average risk, and 24 were classified as being at a fairly low risk. These classifications were all based on the size of the brain cortexes known to be at the most risk in the event of the development of the disease. Smaller cortexes in the brain were taken as a sign having a greater than average susceptibility to the disease itself.

Over the next three years, 21% of the high-risk patients experienced some level of measureable cognitive decline, compared to only 7% of the average risk patients and none of the low-risk patients.

The research also made some interesting findings in another disease marker already identified by science: of the group considered to be at the highest risk of Alzheimer?s, 60% of them had abnormal levels of proteins in their cerebrospinal fluid. Only 35% of the average-risk patients had a similar abnormality in their protein levels, and only 19% of the low-risk patients had the same problem.

Due to the studies fairly small sample size, its findings can only be called inconclusive as of yet and further research is needed to solidify the science behind them. However, the implications of the research are profound and potentially open up the road to better treatment of Alzheimer?s patients thanks to early identification of the disease. While there is no cure as of yet, this research could prove invaluable in helping to discover one.

While the information may not be terribly useful to the layman in terms of identifying the disease (not many of us go in for brain scans on a regular basis), it?s still a very interesting discovery, with some potentially far-reaching effects in terms of disease treatment and identification. Doctors now have one more thing to look for in their patients, increasing the chance that the disease can be anticipated and studied in its onset stages.
