Blacks have trouble clearing cervical cancer virus

CHICAGO (AP) ? Provocative new research might help explain why black women are so much more likely than whites to develop and die from cervical cancer: They seem to have more trouble clearing HPV, the virus that causes the disease.

Doctors have long thought that less access to screening and follow-up health care were the reasons black women are 40 percent more likely to develop cervical cancer and twice as likely to die from it. The new study involving young college women suggests there might be a biological explanation for the racial disparity, too.

If further study confirms this novel finding, it would make the HPV vaccine even more important for black women, said Worta McCaskill-Stevens, a prevention specialist at the National Cancer Institute. The vaccine is recommended for all girls starting at age 11.

The study was presented Sunday at an American Association for Cancer Research conference in Chicago.

Certain strains of HPV, the human papillomavirus, cause cervical cancer, but brief infections are very common in young women. They usually go away on their own within a year or so and only pose a cancer risk when they last long-term.

Researchers at the University of South Carolina in Columbia studied 326 white and 113 black students taking part in a wider federal health study. All were given Pap tests ? lab exams of cells scraped from the cervix ? and HPV tests every six months throughout their years in school.

Although the groups were similar in how many new HPV infections were detected and risk factors such as how many sex partners they had, doctors saw striking differences in how long their infections lasted.

At any checkup, blacks were 1.5 times more likely to test positive for infection with one of the HPV strains that raise cancer risk, said study leader Kim Creek.

"The African-American women weren't clearing the virus as fast. They were actually holding onto it about six months longer," for 18 months versus 12 months for whites, he said.

Ten percent of blacks had abnormal Pap tests versus 6 percent of whites.

Two years after initial infections were found, 56 percent of black women were still infected but only 24 percent of whites remained infected.

The government's National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities sponsored the study. Creek is a paid speaker for Merck & Co., one of the makers of HPV vaccines.

The results are "provocative" and need validation in a study that looks beyond this one region, said McCaskill-Stevens of the cancer institute.

"We have known there are genetic differences between the races," and it's possible that a gene from certain ancestries such as African might play a role in the ability to clear an HPV infection, she said.

Cervical cancer has declined dramatically in the United States because of Pap tests, which are recommended every three years for women 21 to 65. Starting at age 30, women can also have an HPV test every five years; they're not recommended before then because brief infections are so common, they would give too many false alarms.

About 12,000 new cases and 4,200 deaths from cervical cancer occur each year in the United States, mostly in women who have never been screened or not in the past five years.

Paps cost $15 to $60; HPV tests run $50 to $100.

Doctors don't know how the vaccine will affect HPV test results or how long the vaccine lasts, so women should still be screened for cervical cancer if they are within the recommended screening ages.

I find this software AMAZING. I did my first run last night, running it on WinXP 64 bit on a Mac (using VMware / Parallels)... the first run, it submitted to approximately 800 directories and first thing this morning I found the article on over 200 directories already. I timed it today when I submitted another article under another author name. It took about 6 minutes to create all the accounts and it took 8:39 seconds to submit to 867 directories. I've bought three other automated article submission software programs and none of them come as close in ease of usage, efficacy and SPEED. This is AWESOME Vince. hjaynes @ wf

Wow is all I can say! As Mark Dickenson said earlier, this is the BEST article submission software by far. I was lazy to use a cpanel email address and used one of my Gmail accounts. So I obviously got a low sign up rate. But I'm not complaining as I got over 650 accounts confirmed. That was y'day! Today I submitted 2 articles in 2 niches. When I searched for my unique Pen name on Google, already I have 5 of my articles indexed and this is within minutes. This is truly unbelievable and Thank you for a great software. If I can discipline myself to do 2 fresh submissions every week per niche, I should start seeing long term benefits! Thanks for a great software Vince! Chucky P.S. I have used the trial version so far and I am very pleased with the results! I have blasted a spun article (Inbuild spinner works great) to about 400 sites and 10 hours later, when I google an extract from the article bio, Google picks up over 40 sites that has my article. In a few days when all the articles get accepted and when Google spiders pick it up, I will really see the value of this great software. It saves me hours! I've had AMR for a few weeks now and have to say it absolutely kicks ass. There is no doubt that I have historically relied heavily on profile links (with some blog commenting thrown in) for the majority of my backlinking because, to be honest, it always works well for me for Google ranking. But, I am always looking for new backlink sources and have never ever liked any other article submission software before. Each page that I am trying to rank is getting in at least one AMR submission to help balance things out and get more link juice. As someone who has tried pretty much every backlinking software/automation out there, I think AMR is a no brainer for anyone looking for solid sources of additional backlinks hands off. Amazing Smooth Product I have used many article marketing software, none come close to this. I have created many articles using this piece of software. There's a huge synonym database, so no shortage of spinning the words. This software is incredibly fast if you have an average internet connection. Better than MAC Before I came across article marketing robot, I used Mass Article Creator to do all my article marketing work. I was getting a fair amount of traffic, until I started to want more and I began searching. That was when I found Article marketing robot and signed up for the free trial. Good For Writers If you are a writer, this tool is for you! The tool is very fast and works on it's own, but, you do have control over it. If you are willing to pay the price to get the full version, you will save a lot of time and effort. It's the best article submitter on the market. I sent an article yesterday and within minutes it was #1 on the first page of google and it was on the first page several times as well. Now published to over 800 directories. That's the thing about AMR and why it's the best. When you talk about submitting articles that's what it does and it works unlike other article submitters that are full of bugs, mostly dead directories and never get updated. AMR works every time. If article marketing is your main business in internet marketing then you can't live without this program.
