2012 Toyota Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series Test Drive

On Sale Date: May

Price: $32,000?$35,000 (est)

Competitors: Nissan Frontier Pro4-X, Chevrolet Colorado Z71

Powertrain: 4.0-liter V-6, 236 hp; 266 lb-ft (sport mode)

Estimated Fuel Economy (city/highway): 16/21

What's New: Toyota has had a capable and popular TRD off-road package on its Tacoma pickups since 1998. The grouping of parts, developed by the team at Toyota Racing Development (TRD) includes one essential component for slow-speed four-wheeling: a selectable locking rear differential. With it, the TRD package has made the Tacoma a solid four-wheeler. But according to Zach Zwillinger, product development engineer for TRD, Tacoma owners have been yearning for something more extreme. And the company had yet to develop a truck specifically aimed at West Coast Baja racing enthusiasts. "They were asking for a lifted Tacoma," Zwillinger says. But sliding a taller, special-edition pickup truck under the noses of the Toyota executives preoccupied with government safety regulations is a challenging task. Nevertheless in the fall of 2010, TRD began work on the project that would become the 2012 TRD T/X Baja Series.

The Tacoma Baja Series is available only as a V-6 4WD Access Cab or Double Cab short bed, and only in red or black. You can choose between a six-speed manual or the five-speed automatic. It's tempting to describe this truck as Toyota's answer to the Ford Raptor, but that's not quite accurate. The Baja simply isn't that radical?think of this truck largely as a well-executed off-road suspension package.

The Baja Series receives a 1.75-inch lift upfront thanks to TRD springs wrapped around Bilstein shocks. The shocks are based on Bilstein's high-end 9100 Series dampers and use a 60-mm piston (compared with 32 mm for the stock Tacoma 4x4). The new front suspension increases wheel travel from 8 inches to 9.25 inches. It turns out the limiting factor for more suspension movement is the upper ball joint, and finding a better one would have cost too much time and money, according to the team. "We built this system so it could grow with the customer," Zwillinger says. So an owner could, for example, buy a pair of aftermarket upper A-arms that allow even more front-wheel travel, and then have the Bilsteins modified to match. The front bump stops are slightly shorter to allow for the increase in jounce (compression) travel.

In the rear, the TRD team selected the three-leaf (plus one overload leaf) spring pack used in Tacoma towing packages, which provides a 10-mm increase in rear ride height. The damping comes form Bilstein 5160 remote reservoir shocks that have been custom-valved. The team did much of the suspension testing and tuning at the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) in California and had Bilstein's shock-tuning truck on hand to make on-demand adjustments to the valving. "We did at least three or four rebuilds on the rear shocks before we got it correct," says Zwillinger, "but basically we dialed-in the lightest tuning possible that would meet our durability requirements". The rear suspension package increases wheel travel from 8.5 inches to 10 inches?mostly in rebound (droop) travel. And to allow for the increase, the rear brake lines have been lengthened slightly with a bracket.

Aside from the radical graphics package and TRD wheels wrapped with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires, the Tacoma Baja gets a slight bump in power from a TRD cat-back exhaust system. Engineers say the increase is slightly less than 10 hp.

Tech Tidbit:The 3-inch-diameter front coil springs are manufactured by Eibach for TRD. They are off-the-shelf race units rated at 650 lb/in. That's slightly softer than the stock springs.

Driving Character: Lifted pickup trucks tend to ride more harshly than their stock counterparts. The taller springs and higher spring rates, combined with off-road shocks that are way too stiff, make life unpleasant. But the Baja wears such a mild suspension lift and is tuned so well that it's only a bit firmer than stock. In fact, the sport packages offered on cars these days tend to ride rougher than this truck does. You feel a little more road texture in the Baja than you might in a stock truck. But at higher speeds, the Baja's suspension really smooths out the road. And this is true off-road as well.

We drove the Baja up to the Hungry Valley SVRA, about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles, for a day of four-wheeling. Hungry Valley has a mix of slow and high-speed terrain. Early in the day we locked the Baja in low range, engaged the rear locking diff, and walked the truck up a few difficult rutted hill climbs. No doubt the extra wheel travel helped us out on these ascents, but on this type of trail, the rear locker and the aggressive all-terrain tires are the biggest traction aid. On the way down, you simply disengage the locker and let the hill descent control modulate the brakes for you. On higher-speed washboard roads, the Bilsteins really keep the back of the truck from hopping around. It stays planted and feels like it's following the terrain rather than skittering around like most empty pickups do.

In sandy washes, where you need to slide the truck and maintain some wheelspeed, the electronic aids are best left in the off position. The Baja truck soaks up this rough, higher-speed whoops with ease?and much improved over any basic Tacoma. But make no mistake: You are limited in speed, depending on the size of the "whoops" on the trail?an extra inch or so of wheel travel doesn't instantly turn this Tacoma into a Trophy Truck. And we did notice quite a bit of steering wheel movement as the front suspension cycled through its range of motion. Perhaps a steering stabilizer shock would diminish this effect. The Baja package does offer the driver a large safety net when hitting dusty roads and rutted washes. The suspension tuning keeps the tires on the ground. Instead of pogoing the front end as many stock trucks do, you can push the Baja a little harder and it will take the punishment.

Favorite Detail: Factory wheels typically aren't the most attractive designs. Even the Tacoma's lineup of 4x4 wheels are a little boring. But these TRD wheels (in a special finish just for the Baja) work. We even like the simulated beadlock rim, a nod to the real Baja race machines.

Driver's Grievance: As good as the Baja is at handling higher-speed off-road terrain, for low-speed four-wheeling we'd like to see a front locking differential or a limited slip added. Ford recently included this (a Torsen model) in its Raptor. And Toyota could add this feature without affecting the on-road manners of the truck.

The Bottom Line: The Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series is an impressive package, and it adds about $4300 to the price of a TRD Tacoma. Toyota says it will build only 750 of them for the 2012 model year. Why so few? Toyota is essentially capacity constrained. The Baja trucks begin as regular production Tacomas 4x4s that are completed on the assembly line at the San Antonio plant. The trucks are then driven a short distance within the plant complex to Toyota Logistical Services, where a small team turns the production Tacomas into Bajas by hand. It's clear that if the package becomes popular, it will return for 2013. We hear some colors might be added, as well as some unique interior details such as a special doorsill plate or shift knob. Could a more radical package come down the line? Judging by the enthusiasm within TRD, it's certainly a possibility.

This looks interesting to me, are you open to players? If you are, what should we be putting together for a character submission?

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances... Some are just much better than others.

While I've been role playing both online and table top for over a decade, I'm new to this particular forum. Sorry if I seem confused about anything. I'd be interested in playing one of the main characters for a story line like this.

you forgot Phase shifting, each one has a tactical ability and a psychic ability, and you need a different awakening location unless you give it a name separate from Sweet Haven Hospital, but you are in

I gave a different awakening location, just something randomly made up and I fixed the powers issue, I did not realize they were intended to be grouped.

This sounds really good! Count me in!

Would clairvoyance be tapping into morphogenetic fields to gain information on a subject (the parapsychology view), or would it be seeing the past and future?

'ello I'm also quite interested in this RP. So if you also can be a "basic" survivor that's what i want to be.
In case of yes: Count me in.

(AP) ? A political tip sheet for the rest of us outside the Washington Beltway for Wednesday, March 7:

WEDNESDAY'S RECAP

SUPER TUESDAY CHAMP. After racking up six wins, including an Ohio squeaker over Santorum, Mitt Romney spent a relatively quiet day off the campaign trail at home in Massachusetts. He gave an interview to CNBC and was to raise campaign money at an event in Boston. Despite failing to land a knockout punch, Romney insisted in the interview that he's getting the kind of support across the party that he needs to become the nominee. "We've got the time and the resources and a plan to get all the delegates, and we think that will get done before the convention," he said. His campaign also announced that it raised $11.5 million dollars in February.

OUT NEWT, OUT: A super PAC that supports Santorum in the Republican presidential race says it's time for Newt Gingrich to drop out. But Gingrich says he isn't going anywhere. Stuart Roy, an adviser for the Red, White and Blue Fund, told The Associated Press that Gingrich is making it harder for conservative voters to settle on a conservative alternative to front-runner Mitt Romney. Roy noted that Gingrich won only his home state of Georgia on Super Tuesday. Santorum won three. Gingrich says he would have dropped out had he lost Georgia. But he won, and so the race for No. 2 goes on.

DOCOBAMA: Fact checkers: Sharpen your pencils! President Barack Obama's re-election campaign is preparing to release a brief documentary next week about his term in office. Campaign manager Jim Messina says it will "put into perspective the enormous challenges that the nation faced when the president took office and the strides we've made together." The documentary was directed by Davis Guggenheim, the man behind the Academy Award-winning "An Inconvenient Truth," about Al Gore and his global-warming campaign.

OBAMA'S BODY MAN: In losing his ever-present body man Reggie Love, Obama may have gained a valuable campaign surrogate. The former Duke University basketball player stars in a brief campaign video urging fellow African Americans to vote for Obama in November. "From cutting taxes to passing health care to supporting minority-owned businesses, the president has always had our back," says Love, who left the White House last year to focus on completing his master's degree in business administration. "Please visit AfricanAmericans.BarackObama.com and say 'You're with him.' I'd appreciate it and I know he would, too." Love had worked for Obama since 2006.

GENDER POLITICS: Republicans and Democrats are battling for the women's vote. President Barack Obama's Democratic allies say the GOP has launched a "war against women" on contraception and other issues. Republican women, led by Ann Romney, the wife of the GOP front-runner, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska are fighting back, saying it's the economy and jobs that women care about. Why all the attention? More than 90 years after gaining the right to vote, the majority of those who cast ballots in presidential election years are women. Obama won this group by 13 points over John McCain in 2008. Republicans are betting women will evaluate Obama's stewardship of the economy and find him lacking. But the GOP has helped revive social issues like contraception that many thought were settled long ago.

WHERE THEY'LL BE ON THURSDAY:

? Gingrich: Mississippi

? Paul: Day off

? Romney: Mississippi

? Santorum: Alabama

? Obama: At White House

DELEGATE TRACKER

Totals after Super Tuesday voting. Twenty-six delegates from Super Tuesday have yet to be allocated. It takes 1,144 delegates to secure the Republican nomination for president.

? Romney: 419

? Santorum: 178

? Gingrich: 107

? Paul: 47

IN THEIR WORDS:

? "We are still bogged down shooting at each other and the president is looking presidential." ? Former New York Gov. George Pataki, arguing that it's time for the party to close ranks around Romney.

? "What won't they resort to to try to bully their way through this race? If the governor now thinks he's now ordained by God to win, then let's just have it out." ? Santorum, responding to a Romney comment that it would take an act of God for his rivals to amass a competitive number of delegates.

? "We think that will get done before the convention, but one thing I can tell you for sure is there's not going to be some brokered convention where some new person comes in and becomes the nominee. It's going to be one of the four people that are still running." ? Romney, on CNBC's "Squawk Box."

? "If I thought he was a slam dunk to beat Romney and to beat Obama I would really consider getting out. I don't." ? Gingrich.

Never listened to this, but always planned to!! lol. interesting book though. From wikipedia:In this book, the authors put forward a hypothesis that the historical Jesus married Mary Magdalene, had one or more children, and that those children or their descendants emigrated to what is now southern France. Once there, they intermarried with the noble families that would eventually become the Merovingian dynasty, whose special claim to the throne of France is championed today by a secret society called the Priory of Sion.Enjoy

Circle your virtual calendars: Nokia World to be held September 25-26

Last year was a hoot, so why not get excited for the next annual Nokia shindig? The folks from Finland already have Nokia World 2012 in their sights, as they've announced September 25th and 26th as the magic dates for this year's event. So what's in store for us in Helsinki six and a half months from now? Hard to tell this early in the game, but we'd expect to see Stephen Elop touting some new Lumia devices that run Apollo, and -- should we be so lucky -- even one or two with PureView thrown in. It's an exciting prospect, but remember to exercise patience, grasshoppers.

Obama seeks to calm "drumbeat of war" over Iran

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Tuesday the United States 'will not countenance' Iran developing a nuclear weapon but pledged to take a sober approach to dealing with Tehran's nuclear program.

Obama said the announcement of six-power talks with Iran offered a diplomatic opportunity to defuse the crisis.

Amid mounting speculation that Iran's nuclear sites could be attacked in coming months, the president said that American politicians "beating the drums of war" had a responsibility to explain the costs and benefits of military action.

Earlier, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States would take military action to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon if diplomacy failed.

"Military action is the last alternative when all else fails," he told the annual policy conference of the biggest U.S. pro-Israel lobbying group. "But make no mistake, when all else fails, we will act."

Six world powers have accepted an Iranian offer for talks on its disputed nuclear program, the European Union's top diplomat said, after a year's standstill that has increased fears of a slide into a new Middle East war.

The announcement by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton came shortly after Russia called for a resumption of face-to-face dialogue as soon as possible, saying an Iranian letter last month showed it was now ready for serious negotiations.

With Israel speaking increasingly loudly of resorting to military action, the talks could provide some respite in a crisis which has driven up oil prices and threatened to suck the United States into its third major war in a decade.

Iran's nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, wrote to Ashton in February saying Tehran wanted to reopen negotiations and offering to bring unspecified "new initiatives" to the table.

"Today I have replied to Dr. Jalili's letter of February 14," Ashton, speaking on behalf of the six powers after weeks of consultations with them, said in a statement. "I have offered to

resume talks with Iran on the nuclear issue."

Ashton, who represents the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany in dealings with Iran, said the date and venue for the talks would now have to be agreed.

A senior EU official said these talks were not expected before the Iranian new year in two weeks, though there would be a series of preparatory meetings possibly in the coming days.

"Our overall goal remains a comprehensive negotiated, long-term solution which restores international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program, while respecting Iran's right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy," Ashton said in her reply to Jalili.

Western states are likely to tread cautiously, mindful of past accusations that Iran's willingness to talk has been a stalling tactic to blunt pressure and not a route to agreement.

The Islamic Republic's latest approach to the six powers comes at a time when it is suffering unprecedented economic pain from expanding oil and financial sanctions.

WAR FEARS

The resumption of talks nonetheless could slow a drift towards military strikes to knock out Iran's uranium enrichment program, which the West fears is geared to producing atomic bomb fuel and Tehran says is for electricity only.

Israel, which says its existence could be threatened if Iran is allowed to develop nuclear weapons, is losing confidence in Western efforts to rein in the Islamic Republic with sanctions and diplomatic pressure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday that the Jewish state has made no decision on attacking Iranian nuclear sites, sources close to talks in Washington said. He, however, gave no sign of backing away from the option of military strikes.

But the new prospect of diplomacy contributed to a fall in oil prices on Tuesday, with Brent crude down $1.70 to $122.10 by 1458 GMT.

The senior EU official said there was some reason to believe talks with Iran might be productive.

"The first is that there is clear written commitment by Iran to be willing to address the nuclear issue in talks," the official said. "Second is the unity of the international community ... Third is certainly sanctions."

Russia, which built Iran's first nuclear power plant and has far warmer relations with Tehran than Western nations do, has often stressed the need for talks and said coercive pressure on Tehran is counterproductive.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said last month that global powers must work harder to seek agreement with Iran, warning that Tehran's appetite for concessions was waning as it moves closer to being able to build atomic weapons.

Ryabkov said he hoped fresh talks with Iran would address a proposal by president-elect Vladimir Putin for global powers to formally recognize Iran's right to enrich uranium, Tehran to submit its program to full IAEA supervision, and international sanctions to be lifted.

UN VISIT TO IRANIAN MILITARY SITE?

Iran said on Tuesday it would let U.N. nuclear inspectors visit a military site where they have been repeatedly refused access to check intelligence suggesting explosives tests relevant to atom bombs has been conducted there.

Diplomats, however, cited a proviso in the Iranian statement saying that access to the Parchin site still hinged on a broader agreement on how to settle outstanding issues which the two sides have been unable to reach for five years.

An International Atomic Energy Agency report in November said that Iran had built a large containment chamber at Parchin, southeast of Tehran, to conduct high-explosives experiments that are "strong indicators" of an effort to design atomic bombs.

Years of tortuous negotiations have often come unstuck over procedural obstacles imposed by Iran since the IAEA first began seeking unfettered access in the country almost a decade ago to check indications of illicit military nuclear activity.

Israel has mooted pre-emptive bombings against Iran, a hawkish approach that Obama - wary of the risk of igniting a new Middle East war and a global surge in oil prices as he seeks re-election in November - has tried to restrain to give time for harsher sanctions and diplomatic pressure to bear fruit.

Israel insists that military action against Iran would be warranted to prevent it from attaining the capability of making nuclear weapons, as opposed to when it actually builds a device. Washington has not embraced that idea.

"The pressure (on Iran) is growing but time is growing short," Netanyahu was quoted by aides as telling Obama.

Later, addressing the influential pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, Netanyahu said: "None of us can afford to wait much longer. As prime minister of Israel, I will never let my people live in the shadow of annihilation."

U.S. officials say that while Iran may be maneuvering to keep its options open, there is no clear intelligence that it has made a final decision to "break out" with a nuclear warhead.
